The Legacy

Bacon sizzled in one pan, mini pancakes bubbled in a second, and eggs scrambled with cheese and cream cooked in the last. The toaster popped with more toast. Flipping the pancakes, I then buttered the toast and set more to cook before. Transferring everything but the eggs to a tray, I put it all in the oven to keep warm, then poured five large glasses of juice and made coffee.

The doorbell rang.

Pausing, I looked at the empty table and chewed my lip. Going to the intercom, I saw the man who could have been my dad, except for a few minor differences. While my dad's eyes were lavender fading to grey like mine and Savas's, Lorka's were entirely lavender with dark gray striations. His cheekbones were more angular than Dad's, and his lips were thinner. That was about all the difference. Even the age difference wasn't evident. They could have been twins.

"Just a minute," I answered, then went to the front door. My phone rang just as I reached it. "Morning," I greeted Barden. "Everything is fine."

"Your anxiety says differently," Barden replied.

Of course, I was anxious. A big-deal Gelus was at my door, and I was home alone. I was only willing to answer because he'd saved me.

"Lorka just arrived. He's fine to let in, right?"

A pulse of concern came throughout the bond. "Yes."

"Are you sure? Because that's not what the bond is saying."

"Lorka won't hurt you. We're on our way home now. You won't be alone too long."

Relieved by that news, I put my handle on the door. "Okay. I'll see you soon. I love you."

"Love you too, Sash."

Hanging up, I swung the door wide and met my grandfather's eyes. "Lorka, right?"

The smile he gave me didn't quite reach his eyes. "Melisanda told you about me, I gather?"

"She did." Stepping back, I let the man who would have been my grandfather into our home, shut the door, and led the way to the kitchen. "She told me the truth of what happened. That she caved to the pressure of her family and ended things with you, only to discover she was pregnant with Dad. When his wings unfurled at age five, she left and came looking for you, and you told her you wanted nothing to do with her."

"She never mentioned your father in her messages," Lorka defended.

Entering the kitchen, I turned to look at him. "And you didn't love her enough to meet her and discover why she chased you across the country."

The striations in Lorka's eyes widened and spun. I shifted my gaze before they made me dizzy. "It was more complicated than that," Lorka grumbled.

"Not really. Coffee?" Before Lorka could argue, I poured the first coffee pod, then set a second to run while I took it to the table and set the cream and sugar down with it. "You should know my father thinks you left his mother behind when she went to university. He doesn't know that she told you to go."

Lorka inhaled
